The 2026 ABA Practice Startup Credentialing Roadmap

By BYOND Credentialing Solutions · Oct 18, 2026 · 4 min read

A Simple Credentialing Checklist for New ABA Practices

Starting an ABA practice is exciting—but before you can begin working with insurance networks, there are several credentialing and enrollment pieces to put in place.

Here's a simplified roadmap to help you get started.

1. Establish Your Practice

Before beginning payer enrollment, make sure your basic practice information is established.

  • Form your business entity
  • Obtain your EIN
  • Obtain a Type 2 NPI, if applicable
  • Confirm your taxonomy code(s)
  • Establish your practice and billing addresses
  • Complete applicable state licensing or registrations
  • Obtain professional liability insurance for the practice/group (minimum $1 million per claim / $3 million aggregate)
  • Prepare your W-9

BYOND™ Tip: Keep your legal name, TIN, NPI, addresses, and other demographic information consistent across your credentialing records.

2. Get Your Providers Ready

For BCBAs and other credentialed providers, as applicable:

  • Verify Type 1 NPI
  • Confirm BCBA certification
  • Confirm state licensure, where required
  • Complete or update CAQH
  • Gather current CV/work history
  • Verify provider demographics and taxonomy codes

3. Choose Your Payers

Before submitting applications, determine which networks make sense for your ABA practice.

  • Identify commercial plans in your market
  • Research applicable Medicaid programs
  • Verify whether networks are accepting ABA providers
  • Determine group vs. individual enrollment requirements
  • Identify provider affiliation requirements
  • Prioritize payers based on your launch plans

Remember: Credentialing, contracting, enrollment, and provider affiliation aren't always the same thing.

4. Apply & Track

Once applications start going out, organization becomes critical.

  • Submit group and provider applications
  • Save confirmation and reference numbers
  • Track submission dates and statuses
  • Follow up regularly
  • Respond to deficiencies or additional requests
  • Track contracts and effective dates
  • Confirm providers are properly affiliated with your group

A simple tracker: Payer → Provider → Submitted → Reference # → Status → Next Follow-Up → Effective Date

5. Verify Before You Call It Done

An approval doesn't always mean you're ready to bill.

  • Confirm contract execution
  • Verify effective dates
  • Confirm provider affiliations
  • Complete EFT/ERA setup, if applicable
  • Establish payer portal access
  • Verify directory information
  • Save approval and contract documentation

6. Maintain It

Credentialing continues after your ABA practice launches. Plan for ongoing:

  • CAQH attestations
  • Recredentialing
  • Provider additions & terminations
  • License & certification expirations
  • Medicaid revalidations
  • Roster updates
  • NPPES changes
  • Directory maintenance

Starting an ABA practice? You don't have to manage it all yourself.

As your practice grows, credentialing can quickly turn into applications, payer follow-ups, provider updates, recredentialing, and ongoing maintenance.
